WITH a few good swings of the pick, I chunked out a hole in the hard desert soil. I coaxed the plant out of its plastic pot, gingerly placed it in the hole, then backfilled it with soil. After throwing on a splash of water and staking down a fence to keep out hungry rabbits and tortoises, voila: my first creosote bush.
