1. ROAD TO NOWHERE Kenneth Gorch, the discharged U.S. marshall, tells me that Charleston Boulevard doesn’t end, that it’s all developed, one subdivision unfurling after the other, and that then you hit Nellis Air Force Base. Kenneth is also on foot, and he is long gone. We part ways at Eastern and Charleston. I don’t have a map with me. Charleston unwinds ahead: foreshortened developments, people streaming into church services, traffic, birdsong. I’ve been on this stretch for what feels like hours. I check my watch. It really has been hours.
