Ensign dodges a bullet – 172th Edition

As word broke Dec. 1 that the U.S. Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section had informed U.S. Sen. John Ensign’s lawyers he was no longer a suspect in a criminal probe stemming from an affair with a campaign aide, most of the coverage focused on the politics of the decision. This was, the consensus said, good news for Ensign’s chances at winning a third term when he’s next on the ballot in 2012.
